Bringelly Bridge
As part of the preparatory works for the Sydney’s second airport, Bringelly Rd in Western Sydney was subject to an upgrade that included the demolition of the Upper Canal bridge on Bringelly Rd in December 2017.
These works were unique as this bridge crossed a canal that formed part of a reservoir that is used to supply drinking water for Sydney. As a result, specialised environmental controls were employed by Southern Cross to control any pollution of the water catchment. These controls included a slurry catchment frame installed under the bridge, installation of bunds and wet vacuuming of the bridge prior to final cuts being undertaken to release sections of the bridge for craning. Entire span sections were required to be removed in single individual lifts that required a large 450 T crane due to the radius and weight of the sections.
These works were undertaken in a careful and successful manner and was under the supervision of environmental specialists during the project. The outcome of the works exceeded expectations particularly with no pollution of the water being incurred whatsoever.
