Koolkhan Power Station

Koolkhan Power Station

The Clarence Valley is located on the NSW North Coast which was home to the historical Koolkhan Power Station. The station was commissioned in 1952 and decommissioned in 1979 and was not safe in its current condition.

Southern Cross Demolition undertook these works on behalf of another demolition company to ensure the building was demolished safely, on time and within budget. To put the size of the structure into perspective, picture a building over 7 storeys high with a footprint larger than a football field. To Induce Collapse a concrete structure of this size in its entirety was a monumental task.

Careful consideration and planning was required through every stage of the project especially when the building was located on the Richmond River and directly adjacent to a live high voltage sub-station and on the major transport hub for the whole of the Northern region of NSW. It was of high importance that the works were performed in such a manner not to intrude on those supplies.

The power station contained approx. 1800 square metres of friable and non-friable asbestos material. Dust suppression was employed around the perimeter of the building to contain any airborne particles that may be encountered during the removal process. In all 1,100 tonnes of ferrous and nonferrous metals and 12,000 tonnes of concrete were recycled from the demolition process.
