Yarrawa Bridge

Yarrawa Bridge

In 2009, Roads & Traffic Authority NSW (RTA) undertook the demolition of the old Yarrawa Bridge in Denman NSW. The RTA used this bridge as a learning trial for using explosives in a controlled blast to bring a bridge structure down to ground level. Their key objectives were on how the structure could be bought down safely, economical and ensuring that no damage was caused to an existing section of the bridge which had been recently upgraded in prior years and was to be retained.

Explosive experts, Southern Cross Demolition were engaged to ensure these works could be conducted to achieve the RTA’s objectives. Computer modelling was undertaken to allow the RTA to visualise the design and sequence of the implosion and how each component of the bridge would move to allow for a successful collapse. Once the virtual modelling was deemed successful then it was time for Southern Cross to put this concept into reality. Small explosive charges were placed strategically throughout the structure and one week later the two-spanned structure was brought down to ground level with no effect on the remaining section of the bridge. It was a successful outcome and was considerable more economical than demolishing the structure using conventional methods.

The use of explosives is now considered for use on other suitable bridge structures.
